Silver Earrings

I've been dabbling in some poetry. So here's one poem that I wrote the other day.
My silver earrings
Don't wear gold
I thought They're poor in Guatemala.
Don't wear gold
It will get stolen
I thought.
I thought wrong.
My gold earrings would have been fine
The internet can make places sound scary
Guatemala has thieves
they said
and lots of violence.
They said wrong.
Any place is more than
what we hear
Our preconceptions
We try to protect
ourselves
But in the end
we are left with
silver earrings in Guatemala
when I really prefer gold.
